Mark Bate (1857-1927) became a member of Nanaimo Lodge, No. 1090 in 1869, Nanaimo Lodge, No.3 in 1871 and Ashlar Lodge, No.3 in 1873. He remained a member of Ashlar Lodge, No. 3 until his death in 1927.

W. Bro. Mark Bate was one of Nanaimo’s leading citizens. He was the first Mayor of Nanaimo and subsequently served a total of 14 terms as Mayor. Nanaimo has some public monuments honouring Mark Bate.

Mark Bate’s former house is still standing at 522 Hecate Street in Nanaimo.

Mark Bate is buried in Bowen Road Cemetery in Nanaimo.
