John Barsby was a member of Doric Lodge No. 18 who served as Mayor of Nanaimo (1932-1937), as a Nanaimo Councillor (1920-1922, 1924, 1927-1931), as a School Board Trustee, as President of the B.C. School Trustees Association in 1942.

John Barsby School in Nanaimo was named for him in 1956.

John Barsby was also a member of the Nanaimo Rotary Club.
